Beanie Wells is already hurt

Many experts viewed Chris “Beanie” Wells as the most complete tailback in the 2009 draft. However, due to numerous durability questions, Wells slipped to the bottom of round one and was taken behind both Knowshon Moreno and Donald Brown. Wells had a nagging foot injury, and admitted that he wasn’t 100 percent during his final season at Ohio State. The red flags are already proving to be valid.

Wells sprained his ankle in practice on Saturday, and AZCentral.com is reporting that he’s expected to miss practice this week as a result. Wells is already behind Tim Hightower on the depth chart, and missing time won’t help his bid in trying to unseat Hightower as the team’s starting RB.

I love Wells’ size and speed combo, but given his history of foot problems, this is now a major concern for me. I selected Broncos rookie Knowshon Moreno over Wells in a dynasty draft this weekend and I have no regrets. Wells reminds me a lot of Jamal Lewis. Both backs are larger in stature, are grinders, and both have ankles as thin as Ally McBeal’s. Lewis has had his share of ankle problems as well, and seems to have another foot surgery every offseason. Wells may end up being a very solid NFL back, he’s certainly got the talent. However, his given his laundry list of ankle/foot problems, I won’t be drafting him in any of my fantasy football leagues this season.
