Spit on the Star

Spit on the Star

The Dallas Cowboys’ star is one of the most recognizable symbols in all of sport. It’s seen it’s fair share of action (cue Terrell Owens/Emmitt Smith/George Teague highlight circa 2000), and is again the focus of action leading up to this Saturday’s playoff showdown with the Eagles. The video is right here, and you’ll enjoy it. The sadistic part of me does wish, however, that Owens were playing in the game this weekend.

After all, he did have stints with both of clubs, and has a propensity for spitting…

Hammertime: Darren McFadden to blow up next?

Hammertime: Darren McFadden to blow up next?

As young people we all indulge in crazy fads. I admit, I used to be the mullet king. Party in the back, business in the front, as they say. Fads come and go regularly in America, and it’s part of what makes our country an amazing place; we, as people, are always changing. Always searching for the next huge thing.

One of my fondest fad memories came in the form of an Oakland rapper/dancer who burst onto the scene in early 1990, and created a huge wave of culture in the process. One word describes the man born Stanley Kirk Burrell…

Hammertime!”

One Rick James looped bass line and some over-sized pants later, MC Hammer had arrived. “U Can’t Touch This” was the hottest thing out during the early Clinton years, and the fans forked over dollars in droves. Now we all know that Hammer ended up broke and on reality TV, but I don’t care. He had that moment in the sun. For about two years, there wasn’t anyone bigger than the kid from Oaktown with the magic moves.

This brings me to the purpose of my piece. I think there’s a similar tide rising in Oakland again right now, but it has nothing to do with hammer-pants (and yes, I did own a pair). Darren McFadden is arriving as we speak, and the astute fantasy mind is wise to take note. McFadden wowed scouts at the 2008 combine with a rare blend of size and 4.3 speed, and has the tools to succeed.

The comparison between McFadden and Hammer may end up being laughable, but right now I think it’s apropos. I see McFadden blowing up over the next 1-2 seasons, then fizzling out just as quickly. Right now, D-Mac is in a great spot to succeed. The club loves to run the ball, he’s finally getting ample opportunity, and he’s healthy again. This is a good mix of positivity for the former Razorback, and I feel confident he’ll rise up the ranks quickly. Sorta like Hammer, except without the pants.

Also like Hammer, I fear Darren’s run may end up being short. It’s just a hunch, but as long as Al Davis is around, I can’t believe this team will be truly successful. Plus, McFadden has already been tagged as an injury risk, and I fear his small legs and ankles may not hold up to the pounding in the long run. But just like with Hammer, it’s going to be fun while it lasts.

D-Mac is entertaining, engaging, has moves, and deserves attention. Can he avoid flaming out too quickly? We’ll see, but in the meantime…

Stop. Hammertime.

Don’t stop believin’

Don’t stop believin’

While many of my closest friends and fellow Vikings fans began mourning late last month when news broke that Brett Favre wouldn’t be coming to Minnesota, I let a wry smile purse my lips. On this very site I wrote a peice telling you all not to lose faith.  I kept believing that #4 would end up here all along. Today, when a plane arrived in St. Paul from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, a tear nearly dropped my eye. I admit, being right when so many others were wrong was satisfying, but not nearly as sweet as the 2009 season will be.

I follow sports because I love them, yes, but not just for the on-field action. As I’ve explained on these pages before, the stories that are woven together (especially in today’s NFL) are the stuff of dreams and legend. I knew Favre was a bigger story. After all, by simply watching the video below you’ll easily remember that retirement means nothing to this guy.

The Vikings may not win it all this season with Brett at the helm. After all, the guy is nearly 40 and has a partially torn rotator cuff. Still, it’s going to be a helluva fun ride. I’m glad I get to cover it for you here, on my favorite site GoHuddleUp.com all season long.

Roethlisberger press clip

Roethlisberger press clip

If you haven’t seen Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger respond to recent rape charges, you need to. I’ve always been a Big Ben backer, and personally I find it very hard to believe a guy like him would need to force himself on a woman. I remember when Kobe Bryant was similarly accused several years ago, and I said the same thing then. I’ll be shocked if these allegations aren’t found to be completely and utterly false.

Of interest here though is Roethlisberger’s facial expression and tone. You can just feel the guy’s pain. He’s also very clear in pointing out this matter is only a “civil case,” as law enforcement officers haven’t seen enough evidence to actually press criminal charges. Remember, in prison the guilty sleep soundly. It’s the innocent that stay awake at night.

I know Ben has overcome odds before. That terrible motorcycle accident after his first Super Bowl victory could have killed him.  However, I do fear that the emotional faceplant these charges represent may be harder to conquer than any physical trauma Roethlisberger has ever dealt with. Watch the video, and you’ll see. This guy is in the belly of the beast.
