Mr. September
Posted on 19. Sep, 2009 by Jesse in Articles
Every year Tony Romo starts out looking really enticing for fantasy owners and Cowboys fans alike. He’s the picture perfect playboy, and QB of America’s team. He loves the limelight, and dates starlets as the envy of adolescent men everywhere. Then, just as predictably, he falters down the stretch.
We all know Reggie Jackson is Mr. October, but October baseball actually means something. Romo’s problem as Mr. September is that nobody remembers September at all when the Super Bowl kicks off in February. Some around the Cowboys organization swear that things will be different this year. They believe that the team will be more Romo-centric without Terrell Owens in the mix, and that as a result Romo will finally succeed. We’ll see.
Nevertheless, we can’t deny that Romo is awesome in September. He has tossed 22 TD’s in nine career games in the NFL’s opening month, and has an impressive 8-1 record in those game. But still, like any good QB, his season will be deemed a success or a failure based solely upon the outcome of the Cowboys final game.
So for the time being, the skeletons will remain in the closet. It’s September now, and Tony knows how to smile when the cameras are on him early. This weekend’s primetime showdown with the Giants should be no different. Remember, Mr. September torched the G-Men for 345 yards and 4 scores just two years ago in the home opener, which was also broadcast on Sunday night.
I only wonder if this pic was taken of Tony while he and Witten were vacationing two years ago with Jessica in Mexico. If you’ll remember, that was also before a pretty big game against the Giants, and things didn’t go so well.
Of course not, that was January.

- Though most observers around the team believe Brady Quinn will win the Browns starting job, coach Eric Mangini is still undecided about his starting QB.
- The Bills finally saw WR Terrell Owens back on the field. Owens returned to practice on Monday after missing significant time with a sore toe.
- Tom Brady fell awkwardly in the preseason game against the Redskins, but Brady should play in week one despite shoulder soreness. Brady threw two TD’s to Randy Moss before the injury.
- Matt Cassel survived what could have been a devastating leg injury. The Chiefs say his status for week one is in jeopardy, as he’s expected to miss 2-4 weeks.

- Steve Smith gave the Panthers brass a real scare with a shoulder injury, but coach John Fox still believes Smith will be ready for week one.
- Trent Edwards is looking pretty comfortable in Buffalo’s no-huddle offense. In fact, the team has primarily practiced with the no huddle during the entire preseason, and Edwards is improving.
- The Michael Crabtree holdout situation continues to be an utter standoff. Crabtree may not report at all during the preseason, and could wait to sign until right before the season opener.
- Even though he just reported to camp after signing his new deal, Falcons WR Roddy White should play in the preseason opener this weekend.
- Terrell Owens caught two balls during his preseason Buffalo debut on Sunday night, but he’s now injured. Owens is limping around camp with an injured toe.

- Miles Austin has been tabbed by many people as a sleeper in Dallas’ system. Apparently that talk is over, as the team is reporting Patrick Crayton will start opposite Roy Williams this season.
- Anquan Boldin says 15 teams were ready to trade for him this offseason, but he’s returned to Arizona for another year. And he still doesn’t have a new deal.
- Donald Brown continues to get positive pub. This time it comes at the expense of Joseph Addai, who is only practicing once a day as he recovers from offseason surgery.
- Texans corner Jacques Reeves broke his leg today in practice. He reportedly heard a “crack” and immediately fell to the ground. Someone should get on the phone with Dunta Robinson immediately.
- Trent Edwards isn’t worried about working with enigmatic WR Terrell Owens this season at all. Or is he? Writer Tom Curran Tweets about a conversation he had with Edwards.
- Tarvaris Jackson continues to miss time with a strained MCL. He’s unsure of when he’ll return to the field and throw more inaccurate passes.
- The Chiefs were looking to add a veteran wideout to their roster, and found one in former Giant Amani Toomer. The club agreed to terms with Toomer today.
- At a time when most GM’s are shying away, the Packers aren’t saying “no way” to a possibility of signing Michael Vick. They haven’t said “yes way” yet either.

Say what you want, but T.O. has always been entertaining
Over the past decade, very few NFL players have reached the level of infamy Bills WR Terrell Owens has. From his days as a 49er, when he outed then QB Jeff Garcia, to his tour in Philly where he accused Donovan McNabb of folding in the Super Bowl, Owens has always loved him some him. Never shy when camera’s are around, most observers have had a hard time believing anything T.O. says. Who can trust a guy like Owens anyway? From the Drew Rosenhaus “Next Question” episode, to sit-ups in the driveway, to an attempted suicide rumor with the Cowboys, Owens has always put on a show.
Now, with the 2009 season approaching, he’s putting on a show of a different kind. Owens’ reality TV Show is set to lift off on Monday night on VH-1. He swears that the cameras have captured the “reality” behind one of the most misunderstood players in NFL history. The show supposedly lets the viewer in on Owens, the man, instead of the human drama machine we know as T.O.
I’ve never been much of a reality TV guy. Save for a few seasons of Survivor, I’d prefer to watch sports or news on the tube. Although, I will want to see Owens’ show. See, T.O. has something magnetic about him. That special “what’s he going to do next” factor that just keeps people enthralled. I’m guessing it’s pretty entertaining, because Owens has always shined in the limelight. Remember the sharpie? Still, his VH-1 special is just the beginning. This 35 year-old WR will have our attention again all season long.
Owens is set to make his Bills debut on National TV, under the bright lights of Monday Night Football. Yep, in week one his Buffalo squad will face off against Randy Moss’ New England Patriots. Have his skills diminished? Only time tell, but Owens did put up nearly 3,600 yards and 38 TD’s during his three year run in Dallas. Is his supporting cast going to catre to his diva image? Hard to say, but with Lee Evans, Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson around, defenses wont be able to key solely on Owens.
It’s to early to tell whether or not T.O. will succeed in Buffalo this season. We’ll have to wait and see. But one thing is for sure… it’s bound to be entertaining. I’ll pop a batch of Redenbachers on Monday night for the VH-1 kickoff, and I’m guessing the show won’t end until the Bills are officially eliminated from the playoffs. Love him or hate him, Owens makes us take note.
